The Art of Colsie
colsie (kol-zee) / origin: Old Scots for ‘cosy’
- The habit of embracing winter darkness and finding comfort and warmth in life’s simple pleasures
- The feeling that comes with being present, inviting closeness, and appreciating the things that last
- The act of slow living and making time for the people and things that soothe our souls.
For us, colsie is all about the traditions we have in Scotland once the colder weather comes around. It is the feeling that comes with being present, inviting closeness, and making time for the people and things that soothe our souls.
How to Practice Colsie
Colsie is about mindfully taking the time to enjoy the things and the people that matter most to us, especially during the colder months when many of us feel tired or isolated. There is no right or wrong way to practice colsie, it is a personal state of mind which nourishes your soul – and it’s achieved by the simplest of touches.
Take pleasure in daily traditions
Small pockets of magic can be found in daily life, and they can be found when you begin to pay attention. Colsie turns a simple bowl of porridge into a nourishing breakfast. It transforms a bath into a luxurious soak. Simply taking the time to notice the small pockets of happiness that come with seemingly menial tasks, you gain the potential to unlock so much more.
Reflect colsie in your environment
Our homes are our sanctuaries and are the perfect place to embrace colsie. We might be biased, but we think blankets make for the best colsie moments - what’s cosier than wrapping up with a brew and a book underneath your favourite blanket? Invest in a quality throw or two that will keep you snug for years to come. We even created a Colsie Collection to bring warmth into your home.
Be creative with your time
Sometimes slumping on the couch and binging the back doors off one of your favourite TV shows is all we can muster at the end of a long day. We get it. Colsie recognises the importance of dedicating time to yourself. Prioritise the hobbies that you love and get creative with them. At least once every two weeks get your hands dirty; weave, bake, draw, colour, paint, sculpt; whatever resonates with you.
Whilst colsie has a broad definition of slow living, the meaning of colsie is personal. Whatever encourages you to pause, take a moment and appreciate the little things in life. Dancing to your favourite playlist, taking part in a yoga class, listening to a calming meditation – if it brings you joy, go ahead.
